Rock Art A River Runs Gruit

A couple of years ago, we spent a week traveling around Vermont visiting breweries and generally relaxing in the beautiful mountains. We’d heard of Rock Art, but they weren’t super high on our list of places to visit. We ended up stopping in because we were nearby – and we still talk about it today as our hidden gem! While there were several beers we had there that we really liked, it was my first chance to try a gruit – a pretty rare old-style of beer. Rock Art’s A River Runs Gruit is unique and tasty and I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

Brewery: Rock Art Brewing Co. (Morrisville, VT)

Rating: 95/100

Comments: This gruit pours medium brown with a lot of sizable particulate. I got about a finger of white head, but it dwindled to a thin covering very quickly. The aroma pops with herbal and spice notes: chamomile, nutmeg, cinnamon, honey, lavender, and elderberry. The taste isn’t quite as strong as the aroma, and has a very iced tea quality. It’s slightly sweet with baking spices being prominent with complementary floral flavors. It has a nice touch of bitterness in the finish. It’s pretty light-bodied and light on carbonation as the style dictates.
