Each beer that appears on Pint Journal is accompanied by a rating between 0 and 100. See below for a short explanation of what these numbers mean. There are several really prominent beer rating systems out there that are more objective and methodical than what I use here. While my ratings are personal and subjective, I recognize that not all beers were brewed for me and they warrant merit in their rating for being good examples of their style.
95-100: These beers are the cream of the crop for me. They are not necessarily a perfect example of their style, but they are beers that compete for “best beer I’ve ever had” when that question gets asked.
90-94: These beers are gold medal worthy. They are the type of beers that I stop and say “woah” after my first sip – and usually text friends and family members about right away.
85-89: These silver medal beers are top notch and ones that I will gladly wax poetic about if asked. This is the tier of beers that I buy frequently and love to drink casually and enjoy while watching a game.
80-84: Beers falling in this range are good and I would be happy to see them on a menu. With that said, they are less memorable than others I’ve had and they don’t create a “wow” factor for me.
75-79: These beers are drinkable and I would recommend them to others if they were the best available options. Oftentimes with beers in this range, I detect that there is something in the flavor profile that could have been better executed. I am unlikely to purchase beers in this range a second time.
70-74: These beers are fine, but there is typically something better on the menu. I wouldn’t recommend these to others.
65-69: If a beer finds itself with a rating in the 60s, it has a problem. I might even have trouble finishing a beer falling in this range.
0-64: I rarely give any ratings below 65 because nearly all beers have some merit (the exception being some of my homebrews). With that said, occasionally you will run into a genuinely disappointing beer. I would suggest avoiding these and seeking out another beverage.
