Day 9 of the New York State Beers of Holiday Cheer is Sonata Ale from Twin Fork Beer Co. This beer is a clear, golden Kölsch-style ale. The foamy white head shot up the glass right when we started pouring, leaving an appetizing looking beer on the table. The aroma is of pear and floral notes. It’s a soft, rounded beer on the palate and has a low to medium-bodied mouthfeel. It’s just slightly sweet and has a small hop bite in the finish, but it’s an easy drinker. Twin Fork Beer Co. is totally new to me, so I was glad to get to try this one as part of the series!
I also recently learned that the EU marked Kölsch beer with a protected geographical indication! Only beer brewed within 31 miles of Cologne (Köln), Germany that follows the rules of the Kölsch Konvention can technically be labeled Kölsch. This is largely ignored though, apparently, but I will try to refer to these beers as Kölsch-style as a substitute for now!
