Kent Falls Pastori Pilsner

Like much of the beer community, I tend to prefer ales like IPAs and Pale Ales, but when it comes to lagers, there are a couple of styles that really stand out as my favorites. Pilsner is definitely one of those styles, so I tend to be drawn to them in the store when I feel like I’ve been drinking too much of a single style. Kent Falls’ Pastori Pilsner is a Keller Pilsner.

Keller, often labeled as “Kellerbier”, translates directly to cellar beer and is German for a beer that’s been lagered at cool temperatures in a cellar. Kellerbiers are straight from the cellar so they aren’t clarified or pasteurized, so they contain more of the original brewer’s yeast than other crystal clear German Pilsners. Most craft beer fans have become more familiar with these hazier styles of beer over the past few years, but it might still be surprising to some when a pilsner is poured for them and it’s hazy. If you can while at a beer garden, drink one of these straight from the cask!

Brewery: Kent Falls Brewing Co. (Kent, CT)

Rating: 83/100

Comments: Pastori, a Keller Pilsner, pours a hazy golden color with the perfect amount of fluffy white head. The aroma is light and complex with earthy and floral notes, lemongrass, and bread. The flavor is very malt and yeast-driven. It contains a lot of complex fruit character along with the bready malt notes. I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this beer initially, but I noticed my appreciation growing with each sip.
