A lot of breweries are doing interesting combinations of ingredients or jam-packing their pastry stouts with the strangest of things to grab their share of the market. Not all of those experiments turn out very well though. Sometimes I want a great beer that is a bit more traditional in its recipe. Common Roots’ Coffee Cup is a double coffee stout that just really hit the spot. It was everything I want in a coffee stout, and no additional gimmicks.
Brewery: Common Roots Brewing Co. (South Glens Falls, NY)
Rating: 87/100
Comments: This double coffee stout pours an opaque black with bubbly brown head. It’s brewed with local cold-brewed coffee from Kru Coffee Roasters. The aroma is full of chocolate and coffee notes with some light smokiness. The flavor is slightly sweet with chocolate and caramel. The coffee flavor is very present, but it’s more smooth than roasty. It’s medium-bodied and sort of thin with lower carbonation. It’s a good, easy drinking coffee stout, especially for one that’s 9% abv.
