Great Notion Double Stack

One of the great things that’s happened since we started becoming more active with Pint Journal is that we’ve started to make a few friends over the internet. Beer lovers are everywhere, and that means we can now trade beer between ourselves and we can try beers that might be difficult or even impossible to get where we live. Great Notion Brewing, one of the beer world’s hottest breweries right now, came to New York a while back, but it was an extremely limited supply of just two of their beers. Luckily, one of those internet friends we’ve made lives in Seattle and can get Great Notion just about any time he wants – and it turns out he wanted to try a couple of beers from Vermont that we have easy access to. Suddenly, a trade was on! Double Stack, an imperial stout brewed with maple syrup and coffee, was the first stout we’ve tried from Great Notion and all I have to say is, wow! This thing is a maple bomb. We could still smell the maple syrup in our apartment the morning after I drank it.

Brewery: Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR)

Rating: 93/100

Comments: This pours an extremely dark brown color with great brown head. The moment I opened the can, I was struck with a strong maple syrup aroma. It also has aromatic notes of butter and dark roasted coffee. The flavor is commanding with dark coffee and maple. There is a strong chocolate backbone to both the flavor and aroma. It’s thick and sweet, heavy-bodied, and absolutely delicious. It’s a bit boozy at 11%, but not overwhelming. Really, really well done!
