To Øl, meaning “Two Beers” in Danish, is a brewery I discovered over the last few years. I regret not finding out about them before I visited Copenhagen because I would have stopped by one of their bars for sure (don’t worry, I made it to some other local breweries while there). We have a tradition of making Bloody Mary’s in the mornings of major holidays, so we were excited to try Ms. Scarlet, an IPA made with many of the ingredients and flavor profiles common in that cocktail.
Brewery: To Øl (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Rating: 74/100
Comments: This Danish IPA was brewed with tomato, celery, chili, and black pepper. It pours a relatively clear, beet red with a beautiful fluffy light pink head. There is a good amount of tomato juice/bloody Mary mix with spicy chili and black pepper in the aroma. It smells almost like a sour. The flavor is definitely reminiscent of a muted Bloody Mary, with tomato, pepper, horseradish, and some vegetal flavor. It’s pretty thin, dry, and a tad bit grainy though which takes away from the effect. It’s definitely an intriguing project and it seems like the brewers are on track, but it’s not quite perfected yet.
