In addition to my love for beer, I love coffee. Northway Brewing teamed up with Death Wish Coffee, known for having the most caffeinated coffee in the world, to make Pale Bearer. Combining two of my favorite things worked out just perfectly and made me a very happy drinker. My wife isn’t a very big fan of skeleton imagery, but I convinced her to take a photo of this because I had to tell you all about it.
Brewery: Northway Brewing Co. (Queensbury, NY)
Rating: 97/100
Comments: Double dry-hopped with Azacca and HNC 472 hops and then conditioned on coffee beans from fellow Upstaters Death Wish Coffee Co. Pale Bearer pours a hazy gold color with a half finger of bright white head. The aroma is like a traditional hazy ipa with fruit and citrus coming through, with the coffee showing more as the beer warms. The flavor starts mild and slightly fruity, but as it progresses the coffee blasts to the forefront in an amazing way. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, medium-bodied, with a fair amount of bitterness at the end. I love black coffee and hazy IPAs, and Pale Bearer hits the notes for each of these and combines them in a perfect symphony.
