Northway Apple Pie Ale

We all know about pumpkin beers and pumpkin pie. This was the first time I’d seen a beer inspired by an apple pie though so I had to try it. Northway’s Apple Pie Ale was a creative and successful alternative to the other Autumn fruit/pie beers out there.

Brewery: Northway Brewing Co. (Queensbury, NY)

Rating: 85/100

Comments: Pours a moderately hazy light brownish color with about a finger of short lasting white head. The aroma hit me right away with the classic Autumn pie notes. It could be compared to a lot of pumpkin ales in that it is strong on nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice, but it has just enough apple cider sweetness in the smell to set itself apart. The flavor isn’t quite as strong as the aroma, but it tastes so much like apple cider that you could be tricked into thinking you’re drinking the real thing. It has cinnamon, apple, brown sugar, nutmeg, and a bit of pie crust flavor. This beer is light-bodied and well-balanced while leaning just a bit on the sweet side. It’s tough to find a fault with this beer – it’s just delicious and easy to drink! And a great way to have dessert with your Thanksgiving meal!
