I sat down to watch college football today and needed a beer. I grabbed a Rothaus Pils out of my fridge with the thought that a German pilsner is pretty much the perfect style for sports on a hot afternoon – ignoring the fact that I’m indoors in the air conditioning.
Rothaus Pils has a pale straw color with small, white bubbles making up a pretty thin head. The aroma is of crackery malt. A hint of floral hops helps to round out the smell into something that’s not too complex, but refreshing and pleasant.
It’s body is very light and well-carbonated, with the carbonation adding some zip on your tongue. The flavor is similar to the aroma, with notable bread malts balanced with grassy hops. It’s pretty crisp, but maybe not quite as crisp as I expected. Rothaus Pils is certainly what I was looking for on a late Summer afternoon.
