This morning marks the first Saturday of English Premier League soccer action for the 2018/19 season, and my beloved Cardiff City’s first season in the league since 2013/14! Given the time difference between the U.K. and Washington, DC – I woke up early and glued myself to the couch for a long day of footy. All considered, this seemed like a perfect time to crack a new beer open in celebration of a promising season!
Raygun IPA hails from Backpocket Brewing Company out of Coralville, Iowa. It pours a beautiful, slightly hazy golden color with a sticky, thick head that leaves great lacing around the glass all the way down as you drink it.
The label proudly proclaims the beer as ‘Galaxy Hopped’, and it really comes through in the aroma. I wouldn’t say that it has a strong scent, but it has obvious traces of tropical fruit and some citrus notes. In tasting, the beer is a bit dry and bitter, with a pleasant fruitiness and citrus. The beer also includes another Australian hop, Topaz, which provides some depth and clove-like spice to the flavor. This is a hop-forward beer, but the malts provide a solid foundation of caramel that balances everything out.
The Raygun IPA is certainly treating me well this morning. I suppose that good beer will help if my team loses!
