After spending a hefty $10.99 to get a bottle of Brouwerij de Troch’s Framboise Lambic, I was expecting to be awed by a satisfying Belgian framboise. I love kriek and framboise beers and, of course, Belgians have perfected the art of infusing beer with great flavors – and I mean literally any flavor you can think of. Everyone drinks beer, so there should be a beer for everyone is a pretty good motto to live by, in my opinion. It could be, possibly, that I set the bar too high for this beer. Regardless, I was disappointed.
De Troch’s Framboise runs at a low 3.5% ABV and pours a hazy ruby brown color. The head is slightly creamy white, with small bubbles that don’t last all that long. There wasn’t a lot of lacing on the tulip glass either. The aroma is where this lambic really shines. As you’d expect with this sort of beer, the raspberry is front and center and it smells strongly of sweet raspberries and some chocolate malt.
Where it sort of lost me was when I drank it, which generally is the most important part of beer because, you know, it’s a beverage and all. De Troch Framboise Lambic is incredibly sweet, and well carbonated. It grips the tongue and is sticky in the back of the throat, a bit like raspberry candy. There are some hints of chocolate malt in the flavor as well.
Overall, this is a fine example of a lambic but not something that I could sit and drink two glasses of back to back.
